COUNTRY AT A GLANCE

Rwanda is a small republic with a presidential multiparty system, country of 26,338 square kilometers  which enjoys a temperate climate, mild and wet. The terrain is particularly mountainous since the whole country lies above 1,000 m altitude and half of its total area extends between 1,500 and 2,000 meters.The majority of the population lives in areas of medium altitude; Rwanda is called “the country of thousand hills “. Poor in natural resources, Rwanda has based its development on an agricultural economy. The Earth is generous and always prosperous agriculture, however, is extremely dependent on international price fluctuations.

Time difference: UTC+2 (7 hours ahead of Washington, DC, during Standard Time). According to the 2013 estimation, Rwanda counts 2 012 589  people. The ethnic groups are Hutu (Bantu) 84%, Tutsi (Hamitic) and 15% and Twa (Pygmy) 1%. The principal languages are Kinyarwanda ( Over 90%), French, the official language ( 6%), English and Swahili and others (4 %).
